LINK: Waking Up to Rape Culture in Asheville by Heather Laine Talley

I wanna thank everyone who liked, shared, and commented on the blog piece I wrote and posted yesterday about Waking Life Espresso. When I heard and read about Jared and Jacob’s offer of free coffee and conversation in a “safe” place last Friday, I had a sleepless night, and in the morning I felt compelled by their brazen and unrelenting douchey-ness to express the thoughts swirling around in my head, so I wrote them down, and shared them with you guys.

I never expected so many people to respond so quickly and positively to what I wrote. My blog had over 3,500 views yesterday, and apart from 2 dude-bro idiots, all of the comments here and on FaceBook, and elsewhere have been positive and encouraging. You guys rule.

My mom raised me to be a proud feminist, so it was really an honor for me to get a small mention as a “local food critic” in this article on TheFeministWire.com!

One comment contained a link to an article that was also posted yesterday morning, by a writer named Heather Laine Talley. Her piece appears on a web site called TheFeministWire.com, and it focuses on Asheville’s reaction to misogyny in our midst, and how we’re speaking out as a community in the face of rape culture. It’s a wonderful piece, and I think she does a great job of explaining what rape culture is by giving examples of how it’s effected her personally.

Please take a minute to read this article if you have a chance:
