The 2019 Asheville Pie Fight and Bake Sale!

WHAT:
2019 Asheville Pie Fight and Bake Sale
WHERE:
The Asheville Masonic Temple
80 Broadway, Downtown Asheville, NC
WHEN:
Wednesday, May 29th. Doors open at 1:30. Bake sale goes until 3:00, or until all the pie is sold out.
WHY:
This is a fun competition, and a bake sale to promote independent professional bakers, bakeries, restaurants, cafes and other pie makers, while raising money for, and awareness of, the non-profit, historic theater restoration project including the preservation of the hand-painted backdrops at the Asheville Masonic Temple.
100% of the money raised from the sale of pie to the public will be donated directly toward the restoration and preservation of the theater. You can read more about the theatre here.
WHO:
The competitors: Baked Pie Company, The Worthy Baker’, City Bakery, Geraldine’s Bakery, Isa’s Bistro, True Confections, The Rhu, Buxton Hall Barbecue, Chestnut, and Well-Bred Bakery and Cafe

Celebrity Judges: I have assembled an amazing 5-judge panel of local food scene luminaries to make the call at the 2019 Asheville Pie Fight and Bake Sale! They will be judging on appearance, texture, and taste. The top three winners will be announced, but only the number one choice will be declared the pie champ! Our lead Judge is Chef Ashley Adams English who literally wrote the book on pie! She is the author of “A Year of Pies!” Our other judges are Jarika Johnson of Asheville Coffee Tours, Jonathon Flaum of Farm to Home Milk, Autumn Pittman Gregson of Mojo Kitchen & Lounge, and Black Bear BBQ, and Chef Jay Medford of the The Underground Café with DoughP Doughnuts! What a team! I am not a judge in my own events, but I will be trying the pie for sure! (and making silent judgements in mah mind)

SAVE THE DATE!

Please mark your calendars for The 2019 Asheville Pie Fight and Bake Sale happening on Wednesday, May 29th, at The Asheville Masonic Temple! The doors open and the bake sale and judging begin at 1:30pm. The bake sale ends when the pie runs out, so get there on time if you want to buy and eat pie!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A MAJOR FOOD FESTIVAL

This is a small event, that is scheduled to last just one and 1/2 hours, or until all the pie sells out, and the judges are done judging. Each competitor in the Pie Fight is donating 16 hand-pies (or “personal” pies) to the bake sale, and so far there are 10 competitors, so that’s 160 hand pies that will be for sale. As I write this, I can still add up to two more competitors before the event, which would bring that number up to 192 hand-pies for the public to buy at the bake sale. Plan accordingly.

JUDGING / COMPETITION

This is a DESSERT pie competition (no meat pies, pizza pies, or any kind savory pie). Fruit, custard, cream, and other dessert pies are all acceptable. All pies submitted to the judges should be “ready to go,” as there will be no time allotted for competitors to “finish” pies with garnishes, whipped cream, etc. There will be a panel of 3 to 5 expert judges, who will be using a 10 point system to rate each pie on appearance, texture, and taste. The pie with the highest combined score will be declared the winner of the 2019 Asheville Pie Fight, and will receive the respect of the judges, the praise of the people, high honors, all accolades, street cred, bragging rights, and of course, a nifty graphic suitable for printing, framing, and hanging on the wall.

BAKE SALE

Each competitor has also been asked to donate 16 hand-pies (or “personal” pies) for the bake sale. They may donate more than 16 should they wish to. The hand-pies (or individual pies) will be the same flavor as the pies provided to the judges, so that the public can vote online here: https://forms.gle/diqXLcrKmsbN5h7z9

100% of money raised from the purchase of hand-pies (or “personal” pies) will be donated directly to the Asheville Masonic Temple’s theater restoration project.

Competitors are not required to attend the contest, or work at the bake sale, they need only deliver the pies. They have all been invited to vend, however, should they wish to set-up their own table at the bake sale, bring other baked-goods beyond the 16 required hand-pies (ie: other flavors of pie, doughnuts, muffins, cookies, bread, etc), and sell them directly to the public.

There will also be coffee and milk available, provided by Counter Culture Coffee and Farm to Home Milk.

The bake sale will begin at 1:30pm and last until 3:00pm, or until the pies sell out.
