ABOUT THE DOUGHNUTS

These are not your ordinary doughnuts…

Everyone knows that I have a soft spot in my heart for doughnuts… perhaps literally… so when Chef Jay Medford recently opened his Underground Cafe with “DoughP” (pronounced “dope.”) doughnuts, I was super-excited to try his special brand of yeast-style, chef-driven doughnuts!

Yes, I just said that these doughnuts are “chef driven,” and no I am not being sarcastic, facetious, or snide. These doughnuts are created by a chef, and they come in flavors like pickled fennel, beet & ricotta, Mimosa with proseco glaze, blood orange & bone marrow chocolate, and one that is known as the Simpsons doughnut. I bet you can pick that out in the pictures!

Jay’s doughnuts are made using locally sourced eggs and milk from Farm to Home Milk, and there are no artificial colors, or chemical additives, with very limited exceptions like the commercially manufactured sprinkles on the Simpsons doughnut, or the candy hearts on his Valentine’s Day doughnut. All other colors and flavors are achieved using fruits, vegetables, and farm-raised animal products, locally sourced and organic whenever possible of course.

I’m telling you what, these are chef-driven doughnuts, and that ain’t no joke.

Keep scrolling down to enter this contest with your comment, and in the meantime, please visit Jay’s Underground Cafe, which is located in the basement of the famous Jackson Building in Pack Square. He has a full lunch and breakfast menu, including burgers, sandwiches, meatloaf, grits, salads, some vegetarian options, and at least one delicious vegan dish at all times.

Jay is an Asheville native, a really nice guy, who is running his first restaurant, which is also co-owned by his family members. In my opinion, Chef Jay is bringing high quality, fun, delicious food, at a reasonable price, straight to the heart of downtown! Pay him a visit and tell him Stu sent you!
